Carl Jung, the renowned Swiss psychologist from the late 19th century/early 20th century, believed that we all have a true 'self'.
However, this unique self identity is superseded and stifled as we grow up by vices such as ego, external circumstances, friends, family, environment and everything else we encounter.
Our true self is an individual separate from the identities of others and full consciousness of ourselves.
Jung called this self-realisation 'Individuation'. And stated that it is a lifelong process as well as a goal.
So, what's the benefits of Individuation?
Full control over your desires and impulses
Form healthy relationships with others
Clear sense of self and confidence in pursuing your goals, even if they differ from those around you
No reliance on another person
Less challenges in personal or professional life, including better decision-making
Sounds good, doesn't it?
Essentially, it allows you to control your subconscious and leave yourself immune to mental instability. In that sense, it shares many similarities to the introduction of Stoic ideals into your life.
So, how does one 'Individuate'?
Here are 3 ways to start:
1. Go to therapy
Go to therapy, possibly cognitive behavioural therapy. This will uncover suppressed memories about yourself, which will give your a better understanding of why your subconscious mind thinks the way it does.
2. Pay attention
Be attentive to every impulsive action you take. Think, why did I do that? The reason you pick up your phone is rarely to check something important, it can be a range of emotions from anxiety to just plain boredom.
3. Educate yourself
Learn more about Carl Jung, Individuation, Stocisim and Taoism. Einzelgänger is a great place to start!
I have to add that I am a complete beginner to Individuation, and I only first came across the term about 6 months ago. I have, however, been trying to understand and control my subconscious mind since I can remember. And chances are, you have too!
Don't just spend life drifting from impulse to impulse, driven by external desires.
Develop the fulfilling knowledge that whatever happens beyond your control, you'll be okay.
