We all hate being uncomfortable. In fact, our brains are hardwired against it. But often the uncomfortable action is usually the one we should be doing.
Imagine a life where you only ever chose the comfortable option at each present moment. You would:
take sick days from work
never try anything new
sit at home watching Netflix eating Doritos throughout the day
never exercise
never go through with plans
Sounds pretty fun, right? Sure, for a while. Then suddenly:
you lose your job for slacking
you start getting obese, creating massive long-term health risks
you run out of breath walking up the stairs
you lose your friends
your family no longer want to make plans with you
you have crippling anxiety watching everyone around you start businesses and families
Suddenly your comfortable life doesn't seem so comfortable, does it?
It's well known that choosing long-term gratification over short-term gratification will lead to a happier and healthier life, so why do so many of us choose what's comfortable now when we know it will have implications in the future?
It's because our ancient mind is now living in the 21st century. And that mind evolved from needing to take actions right now.
Think about it, when we were cavemen roaming through the earth trying to survive, all that mattered was what was happening in that moment. Trying to find food for tonight, and escape getting eaten by another animal.
No wonder we find it easier to choose the comfortable option today.
Like so many aspects of personal development, you need to fight through the ancient urges of our brain, and focus on what will make you fulfilled in the world around us.
Choose the uncomfortable option, to feel at peace in the future.
How? Here are a few starting points:
Take up public speaking opportunities when presented to you
Run long distances
Lift heavy weights
Start a difficult, long project and stick to it
Wake up earlier than usual
Start today, and the you of tomorrow will be forever grateful.
